Hello, Marc-Alan Barnette from Nashville here. I moved to town from Birmingham, April Fools Day in 1988. I did my first writers night/open mic that Monday, the 4th, at a club called Douglas Corner Cafe.` I was the first to sign up, yet the last one to play because the featured guest brought 16 of her friends in to play. I waited my turn, going on at a quarter to one in the morning, with a full house dwindling down to three people. The sound man, the bar tender, and a guy throwing darts in the back of the room. I did my three songs and the guy throwing darts asked if I had a tape of my funny songs. He was not in the business.
Six months later I saw that same guy out and he told me Tree publishing (at that time the largest company in Nashville, soon to become Sony music, still the largest) was trying to find me. His roommate worked in the tape room of Tree and was trying to start a career as a song plugger. (Note to prospective songwriters, PUT YOUR PHONE NUMBER ON THE CD!)
To make a long story longer, that contact led me to my first single song contract, which led to one of my songs being played on the stereo in the vice president`s office, and Billy Sherrill, who produced Tammy Wynette and George Jones, walking past the office, hearing the song, and cutting it on his new discovery at that time, Shelby Lynne. The song, THAT`S WHERE IT HURTS" was used in a Willie Nelson/Kris Kristofferson television movie called ANOTHER PAIR OF ACES on CBS, and subsequently led to a career in Nashville that has lasted 20 years.
I now teach songwriting and music business with my "Marc-Alan Barnette`s Songwriter tours of Nashville" and has led me to write with 25 number one songwriters and mentor writers across the US, Canada, Austrailia, New Zealand and other areas.
All started from a writers night/open mic.
That`s my story. I enjoy this site. Thank you for being there.
